Large Component CNC Machining of a Stainless Steel Seismic Joint Cover for the Construction Industry

Silicon Valley Precision was contracted by a customer in the construction industry to fabricate custom stainless steel seismic joint covers.

This project posed a number of aesthetic and structural demands, including the accommodation of multi-directional pedestrian traffic as well as being ADA complient. We were able to creatively manufacture this large part to the specialized design criteria using our advanced SNK RB2NM 5 face bridge type machining center, with a custom built blade system to cut the 135 grooves .125 dp x .125 wide x 58" long. The hot rolled, annealed, and pickled 304L stainless steel was milled to a finished dimension of 6'-2¼" long x 5' wide x 3/4" thick, while holding the tightest tolerance of ±0.005". The part was then deburred, A U channel welded on the bottom, cleaned, and packaged for shipment.

This seismic joint cover was thoroughly tested for accuracy and quality, including dimensional inspections, visual inspection, as well as first article inspection reports. 116 covers were produced and delivered to San Francisco, California, at a rate of 5-10 pieces per day for the duration of the project.
